I became a fan of HASS' when my wife and I went to N'awlins for vaca. It during the jazz fest.
I saw Hass play with Ravi Coltrane at Snug Harbor(?). I think that was the name of the club. Man, the grooves in 21,9, bars of 3/16 in the middle all with an amazing dirty groove foundation. he used shakers taped to sticks, hi-hat tambourines, the works. All music and every now and again some sick chops. It was one of the greatest drum performances I've seen. Then I saw him with Manhattan Transfer, and that was pretty good. Looked like he was just doing his job. Sounded good though. I bought Ravi's Mad 6, which is a great C.D, HASS is the only drummer on it with a changing all star band of musicians, but not nearly as good as what I saw live. Apparently he was looking at that crazy music for the first time during the session.
Then I bought Traveler his solo work, which I loved. But you have to be looking for great music, not just pedal to the metal drumming. I knew Hass was the ultimate musician when I asked why he kept a take where his dble bass playing was very uneven. He said that was the first time he'd ever played dble bass on a session and was inspired by seeing Virgil. He heard it in this tune JBen Jazz and went out bought a pedal and went for it. I admire this. He then said, they only did one take because it felt so great and other soloists played great so he was thinking more like a producer. He didn't care that his left foot sounded weaker for a fill because the whole tune had spirit. That blew me away. I don't know why, but then I really respected him. Plus besides playing drums he produces, and writes music for T.V shows. I admire drummers who are real musicians and can tell you the chord changes to a tune and who are familiar with the keys and timbres of different instruments.

About SDK's "big gigs", ok, i am curious now! What are these big gigs, i have to ask [img]biggrin.gif[/img] especially since we are both in Seattle.

I don't want to dwell on this, but I just interviewed Teddy for a drum magazine. He is the MD on that Britney gig. I'm not sure what the offer was when you went to go for the part, but I have him on tape confirming he is the MD...

And another thing, regards pre-records - I also have him on tape (along with Joe Dorosz his tech) telling me that all is played live by the band apart from some sounds and loops on about two songs out of the whole song... I sat behind him in soundcheck and through the gig and saw with my own eyes...

Again, I'm not sure what the conditions were when you went for the gig, but it'd have been interesting to see how much it's changed...

We're all curious as to what pop gigs you do, let us in man!!!!!

Next time one of you has the pleasure of meeting Vinnie, may I suggest that you ask the great man himself how much he gets for doing sessions/Sting? I BET you wouldn't have nerve to!! If you did... I bet I can anticipate what his responce would be.

I always thought the topic title referring to the specific "Vinnie's salary" was a little over the top anyway.

If there's going to be discussion on things pertaining to these types of matters, it's usually prob best to remain a bit vague [if at all.]
